This type of thinking and response is like a well-worn shortcut through the woods, it’s quick and habitual, but not necessarily useful in this modern world. The monkey brain also thinks it keeps us safe through negative self-talk, “You can’t do that…” “When you did that before you failed…” “You know you’re too clumsy/stupid/over-weight…” this negative talk keeps us stuck in a rut!

Self-affirmation Theory is widely supported by the scientific community, and there have been several empirical studies to support its effectiveness.

Positive affirmations work best when they play to our identity and core values, and we are able to FEEL them to be true. For instance, when we affirm, “I am a nice person” it’s not being big-headed, it’s simply reminding us of the person we desire to be, we then act accordingly, and the actions affirm our positive self-view – over time changing the habitual pathways into new, positive ones.
